Today we explore the concept of “deaking” (from the Greek word “diakonia”) as a call to every disciple of Jesus, not just those who hold the official title of deacon. Drawing from Acts 6:1-8, we explore how the early church navigated rapid growth by appointing servant-leaders to oversee practical needs, freeing the apostles to focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word. Both spiritual tasks like preaching and practical tasks like distributing food are described with the same Greek word, showing that all forms of serving are equally valuable in God’s kingdom. Every follower of Jesus is called to “deak,” meaning to serve and minister using the gifts God has given them. We ordain those deacons at Outlook who “captain teams of the deaks,” those leading others in specific ministry areas. The most important qualification for this role is not years of faithful service but being filled with the Holy Spirit, which produces fruit, wisdom, faith, grace, and anointing. We as believers need to remain flexible and Spirit-filled so that God’s life can flow through His people as the church continues to grow. As in the image of new wine needing new wineskins.
